Cactus Wren Largest wren in North America--desert bird that can survive without freestanding water--upperbody brownish with white streaks-- long white stripe at eye--wings barred--tail barred with black--attacks nest predators--destroys nests of other bird species--pecks or removes eggs--also eats insects and some fruit.

Osprey Large raptor adult male--chocolate brown back with white breast and dark line mask. Both sexes have white head with distinctive dark line mask around eyes. Hunts from perch and will dive for fish.

Great Blue Heron Large gray bird, long legs, "S" shaped neck, long thick bill, white crown stripe, bluish gray back, wings and belly--Walks slowly, stands and stabs prey with quick lunge of the bill--eats Fish, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and small mammals.

Phainopepla Member of silky flycatcher family--Noticeable crest and long tail--upright posture when it perches--Its chief food
is the berries of the Mistletoe but also eats berries of junipers and elderberry--will also hawk for insects like a flycatcher. |
